Silicon Valley Bank's annual State of the VC-Backed CFO report provides comprehensive benchmarking insights from 200+ CFOs at high-growth venture-backed companies, analyzing operational trends, adoption of financial tools and tech stacks, and strategic best practices that drive success in the innovation economy. Three key takeaways emerged from the research:
Product and engineering departments lead in demonstrating clear value.
So far, only 5% have conducted AI-related layoffs.
Yet median spend is still only expected to reach $50K.
Finance leaders across the innovation economy shed light on trends and best practices.
Our report examines the experiences and perspectives of VC-backed CFOs with an impressive track record. Collectively, these executives have overseen 105 IPOs, 390+ acquisitions, and represent companies that have raised $26.5B in venture capital, generated $10.7B+ in 2024 revenue, and employ more than 36,000 people.
Half of surveyed companies report measurable ROI from AI spending across the business.
ROI is uneven across functions, led by product and engineering, followed by finance, marketing and customer support.
More than a third of companies spending on AI have reduced junior hiring in 2025 due to AI adoption, and that number is expected to increase in 2026 as efficiency gains compound.
AI is rewriting the org chart, but its effect so far has been nuanced. It’s only triggered layoffs at 5% of the companies surveyed, signally a hiring mix shift rather than broad cuts.
VC-backed CFOs rank AI adoption as the primary external factor impacting their business, placing it above inflation, interest rates, tariffs and government regulation.
Though AI leads, geopolitical tension is gaining a significant and growing concern demanding CFO attention.
